KIDS: Light, Form and Shadow Workshop with Jim Gingerich

March 28, 2026 | 2 - 3PM

Learn a Lifelong Skill Set: Light, Form & Shadow in Six Simple Steps

Discover the foundation of strong drawing and painting by mastering the essential relationship between light, form, and shadow.

In this hands-on class, students will work from a simple sphere placed under a focused light source. As the light casts a clear shadow across the table, you’ll learn how to observe and translate what you see into a convincing, three-dimensional image.

We’ll begin by drawing a circle to establish the sphere, followed by an oval to map the cast shadow. From there, using grayscale pastels, students will build depth and dimension step by step—placing the highlight, defining the core shadow, shaping the cast shadow, and blending smooth halftones.

By the end of the session, you’ll understand the six essential steps that transform a flat drawing into a realistic form—skills that apply to every subject you create from this point forward.

No prior experience needed—just a willingness to see light in a whole new way.

Pricing:

  • $5 for General Admission

  • Free for Southampton Students

KIDS: iPhone Photography Workshop: Double Exposure & Visual Storytelling

April 4, 2026 | 2 - 4PM

In this hands-on photography workshop, students will use their iPhones to transform everyday photos into powerful visual stories. Moving beyond simple snapshots, students will learn to create double-exposure and overlay photography — blending two images into a surreal composition.

Imagine photographing a classmate and merging their silhouette with ocean waves, glowing sunsets, forests, or abstract textures — creating an image that feels like stepping into another reality.

Students will learn how to:

• Capture strong portraits using natural light

• Compose dynamic texture and background images

• Use iPhone editing tools and Snapseed

• Layer and blend photos using double exposure tools

• Adjust opacity, contrast, brightness, and mood

• Create visual stories exploring identity, dreams, and alternate worlds

By the end of class, students will produce at least one finished surreal portrait ready for sharing or printing.

KIDS: Drawing Workshop with Paton Miller

April 25, 2026 | 2 - 3PM

Paton Miller, artist, educator, and curator of East End Collected, will be offering a drawing at Southampton Arts Center for Kids!

Paton has been teaching for more than 35 years. He says I haven't reinvented the wheel in drawing instruction but what I have found over the years is that my young students are able to grasp the same lessons I received while studying at academy when I was 19 years old. I see my job as making the basic cornerstones of drawing as clear as possible. The results, more than three decades of them, have been impressive.
