Southampton Arts Center Announces October Programming

(Southampton, New York…October 2023) Southampton Arts Center [SAC – southamptonartscenter.org] welcomes September with Premiere Film, Halloween Disco, and much more. In addition to other events, SAC’s current exhibition, HEROINES OF THE ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST ERA, curated by Christina M. Strassfield, with collection by Rick Friedman and Cindy Lou Wakefield, opens on Saturday, October 7. Here’s what’s on deck at SAC this month…

 

Studio: Watercolor - Thursdays, October 12, 19, + 26 @ 10 AM

Taught by Janet Jennings, we will explore their palette and composition choices and experiment with applying their techniques to our own work. Weekly demonstrations of watercolor techniques will include gradated washes, wet on wet, wet on dry, and dry brush. Limited availability for size In this 5 week class.

Studio: Figure Drawing - Fridays, October 13, 20, + 27 @ 1 PM

Working from a live model, artist Linda Capello’s figure drawing workshop will explore techniques of line, mass, gesture, proportion, and foreshortening, starting with short poses and working towards one long pose. Limited availability – registration is required.

Film: Figures Transformed, Saturday, 14 @ 4 PM

At Southampton Arts Center, FIGURES TRANSFORMED showcased the works of three artists, Deborah Buck, Hal Buckner, and Strong-Cuevas, from different generations who used the figure as the central imagery in their work. Join us In the premiere of Lana Jokel's film of the same name, prior to a reception for the showing and the new show's opening.

LIVE: Women of the Abstract Expressionist Era Opening Reception, October 14 @ 5 PM

LIVE: War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast, Saturday, October 21 @ 2 PM + 7PM & Sunday, October 22 @ 2 PM

Joe Landry’s radio play, War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast. A cautionary tale and a reflection upon the power of media unfolds in this riveting retelling of the October 31, 1938 broadcast. Directed by Michael Disher.

LIVE: Halloween Silent Disco, Saturday, October 28 @ 7 PM

Come dance at this outrageously fun (and quiet) rave featuring DJ’s and multiple music genres. Quiet Events provides their three-channel LED-style headphones allowing guests to change channels to different types of music. Headphones light up with colors assigned to each channel so dancers can see what others are listening to base on the color of their headphones.

TALK: Collectors Talk with Rick Friedman and Cindy Lou Wakefield, Sunday, October 29 @ 2 PM

Southampton Arts Center invites you to an intimate conversation with collectors Cindy Lou Wakefield and Rick Fieldman, discussing how they formulated their collection and how it has evolved since. Guest speaker and curator, Christina M. Strassfield will be joining them in the discussion.
