Southampton Arts Center Announces May Programming ‘A Moment in Time: Iconic Images by Harry Benson’ Opens

(Southampton, New York… April 2023) May promises to be an exciting month at Southampton Arts Center [SAC – southamptonartscenter.org]. A new exhibition, A MOMENT IN TIME: ICONIC IMAGES BY HARRY BENSON, curated by Sally Martin Katz, will open on Saturday, May 6. The exhibition is a presentation of the photographer’s impressive collection of images documenting civil rights figures, politicians, musicians, celebrities, and athletes. May will also feature stage acting classes, talks, jazz, and more. Here’s what’s on deck this month…

Studio: Figure Drawing Workshop – Fridays, May 5, 12, 19, + 26 @ 1 PM 

Working from a live model, artist Linda Capello’s figure drawing workshop will explore techniques of line, mass, gesture, proportion, and foreshortening, starting with short poses and working towards one long pose. Limited availability – registration is required.

Art: A MOMENT IN TIME: ICONIC IMAGES BY HARRY BENSON Exhibition Opens

A MOMENT IN TIME: ICONIC IMAGES BY HARRY BENSON, curated by Sally Martin Katz, is a presentation of the photographer’s impressive collection of images documenting civil rights figures, politicians, musicians, celebrities, and athletes. Benson’s iconic work is an embodiment of some of the most significant moments captured in the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibition will be open Friday through Sunday from 12 to 5 PM.

Talk: Southampton Water Quality Panel – Wednesday, May 10 @ 5 PM

New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (NYLCVEF) and the Village of Southampton will host a discussion focused on water quality work in Southampton. Hear from a panel of experts on ongoing and future projects aimed at improving water quality as well as the policies in place that will help to do so.

Live: Hamptons Jazz Fest: Robin Verheyen Quartet – Saturday, May 13 @ 7 PM

Join Southampton Arts Center and Hamptons Jazz Fest as we present Robin Verheyen Quartet for an evening of jazz. Saxophonist Robin Verheyen won the prestigious Django d’Or prize at the age of 25. He has traveled the world playing in numerous bands and recording with Grammy award-winning artists.

Studio: Introduction to Stage Acting – Monday, May 15 + 22 @ 7 PM

This six-week class for beginners, as well as actors with some stage experience, will help individuals hone their craft in a supportive studio laboratory environment. Celebrated husband and wife actor/director/producers Kate Mueth (founder and artistic director of The Neo-Political Cowgirls and Mulford Rep) and Josh Gladstone (former artistic director at Guild Hall and co-founder of Hamptons Shakespeare Festival), will guide a weekly two-hour acting class through a series of play-centered theater games, improvisations, text work, and introduction to vocal and movement exercises. The workshop culminates in a final public presentation of scene work and monologues in SAC’s theater.
