Southampton Arts Center Celebrates Successful East End Collected7 Exhibition - Lana Jokel’s ‘The Way It Goes’ Documentary Film to Kick Off Closing Reception
(Southampton, New York… April 2023) Southampton Arts Center’s [SAC – southamptonartscenter.org] first exhibition of its 10th anniversary year, EAST END COLLECTED7, showcased the work of more than 40 regional artists working on—and inspired by—the East End. Curated by Paton Miller, the exhibition will close on Saturday, April 29 at 6 p.m. with a special reception. Prior to the reception, a documentary film on exhibition artist Nathan Slate Joseph will be screened in SAC’s theatre. The Way It Goes by filmmaker Lana Jokel will be presented at 4:30 p.m.
“Beginning my tenure at SAC with the celebrated East End Collected series has been exciting,” shares SAC executive director Christina Mossaides Strassfield. “Working alongside the SAC team, Paton Miller, and the many talented artists to present a show that exemplifies art on the East End was the perfect start to our 10th anniversary. Now, we are thrilled to have Lana Jokel present her documentary on one of the artists, Nathan Slate Joseph.”
The Way it Goes explores the life and career of Nathan Slate Joseph. His work is about expansion and contraction, statements of destruction and reconstruction, comprised of rusted sheets of steel and chosen objects. The works, vibrant in color, are cut, bent and welded into shapes and wall reliefs. The film shows the creative process, interwoven with scenes through the decades; family life, art world events and figures, and the artist himself, intense, creative, outspoken, funny, and real.
“Being an artist is often a lifetime passion that requires unflinching dedication and perseverance,” Jokel explains. “I hope to show, through my documentaries, the process and evolution of the art works. I also try to capture the artists’ vision, their inspiration, ideas and their personalities.”
On the exhibition, Miller shares: “It was two years ago I began curating the seventh East End Collected exhibition and this iteration has been received very enthusiastically, starting with an opening night mid-February with 750 people attending. Many pieces exhibited have found new homes with collectors, making this the most successful exhibition of the series in SAC’s 10-year history. I’d like to thank the board and staff of SAC, particularly Christina Strassfield who, besides helping me with placing the works, joined myself and the artists during our artist round table talks, exhibition tours, and in general was a positive and constructive director from start to finish.”
