Southampton Arts Center Announces December Programming - Celebration of Trees

(Southampton, New York… December 2022) December promises to be an exciting month at Southampton Arts Center [SAC – southamptonartscenter.org]. In addition to our fall exhibition, A CELEBRATION OF TREES, SAC will offer new programming complementing the exhibition, including films, talks, and studio workshops for kids and adults. December will include the return of tree walks with experts and new artist led workshops and interactive kids programming. Here’s what’s on deck in December …

Studio: Painting Class with ArtSEA: CREATE + SIP: Oysters – Thursday, December 1 @ 6 PM Please join us for a Cornell Cooperative Extension ArtSEA night out at SAC. ArtSEA Create + Sip events allow guests to learn about local species and habitats while creating marine-themed art. This month’s topic will be oysters and CCE Marine Program staff will present information on our local oysters, including details on their spot-on-shell oyster reef efforts that are enabling millions of oysters to be restored to our bays each year to help aid in water quality improvement, population enhancement, and creation of habitat. Guests will then we guided in using an easy watercolor technique to create a series of beautiful oyster shells that will be framed and ready to take home to enjoy or give as a holiday gift.

Studio: @ SAC: Figure Drawing Workshop – Fridays, December 2, 9, 16 @ 1 PM

Working from a live model, artist Linda Capello’s figure drawing workshop will explore techniques of line, mass, gesture, proportion, and foreshortening, starting with short poses and working towards one long pose. Limited availability – registration is required.

Eco: @ SAC: Birds of Prey with Quogue Wildlife – Fridays December 3 @ 1 PM

This program will introduce children to live birds of prey, as they meet QWR’s resident raptors. Children will learn the personal history of each native New York animal and why it lives at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, as well as the adaptations that allow these animals to be such incredible hunters.

Eco: Madoo Conservancy Tree Tour – Sunday, December 4 @ 4PM

Explore the grounds of the Madoo Conservancy with Executive Director Alejandro Saralegui. Over the course of its 55-year history Madoo has been enhanced with a spectacular collection of trees. Not an arboretum per se but a selection of deciduous and evergreen trees selected by Madoo founder Robert Dash for their artistic, botanic, and historical interest. Whether rare or common, every tree has a story to tell at Madoo.

Please dress appropriately for this outdoor walk and wear sturdy shoes. The tour will last approximately 1 hour.

Studio: Artist led workshop with Kryn Olson: Abstraction in Nature – Saturday, December 10 @ 3 PM

CELEBRATION OF TREES exhibition artist Kryn Olson will lead a workshop on exploring abstractions in nature. Working with acrylic paint, gel medium, and water-based crayons/pencils, abstractions from nature will define as we apply different media. Layer upon layer, the acrylic paint will be applied – using color that excites and temps us so we will push our creative capabilities. Spraying and dripping of isopropyl alcohol, cells will be created that will then be defined and highlighted. We will allow the paint to direct us up to a point when we will then direct be using line and texture to define what we love most.

Kids: Watercolor painting with – Tony Valderrama Saturday, December 12 @ 3 PM

Enjoy the colorful beauty of watercolor painting while capturing the essence of what a tree means to you! Every tree has a special purpose and meaning on this planet, just like you and I. Learn about basic painting techniques as you honor your favorite oxygen sharing friends!

Studio: Artist Led Workshop with Dan Welden– Saturday, December 15 @ 3 PM

A CELEBRATION OF TREES exhibition artist Dan Welden will lead a workshop on the subject matter of trees. In this class you will explore the presence of trees in relationship to your own interpretation working with charcoal, crayon or pencil first and then secondarily introducing color with Dan Welden’s technique of Swiss Caran D’Ache crayons and acrylic medium on fine paper.

Art: A CELEBRATION OF TREES – Closing Reception – Sunday, December 17 @ 4 PM

Join us this as we toast, A CELEBRATION OF TREES with a special evening featuring a unique tree music performance with folk musicians Elizabeth LaPrelle and Brian Dolphin. The duo will perform a set of tree-themed music, with traditional songs that have themes both environmental and magical which will be accompanied by banjos, fiddles, and guitars. Enjoy getting to know the many artists who helped make the exhibition such a success, as well as take in an artist-leg gallery tour and poetry reading.
