Southampton Arts Center Offers Full Slate of Programs for June
With spring in full swing and summer looming, Southampton Arts Center [SAC – southamptonartscenter.org] is filling up their calendar with a full slate of programming to advance their mission of community building through the arts. The month of June will bring the fourth annual Architecture + Design Tour with Peter Marino, a film presented with Hamptons Doc Fest, an inaugural summer cocktail party with the new, outdoor public art project, WHIMSY, and films, talks, and kids’ programs complementing SAC’s current exhibition, EARTH – Artists as Activists. Virtual Talk: Be a Good Egg Part I – Wednesday, June 2 at 6 PM
Group for the East End educators will introduce you to National Audubon’s "Be a Good Egg” program–an outreach initiative implemented by Audubon staff, chapters, volunteers, and other conservation partners. Participants will learn basic shorebird identification and biology as well as key strategies to reduce human disturbance threats to coastal birds by encouraging people to “share the shore” with birds while visiting the beach.
Meet Our Native Wildlife – Friday, June 4 at 4 PM
Join the Quogue Wildlife Refuge to learn all about the native wildlife that call Long Island home! During this 50 minute program, you will have a chance to meet a variety of animals that reside at the Refuge. Each animal's personal history, adaptations, and conservation in the wild will be discussed.
Be a Good Egg Part II – Saturday, June 5 at 11 AM
Come create your “Be a Good Egg” sign on the Southampton Arts Center’s West Lawn. Group for the East End educators will lead you in an artistic expression of what it means to be a good shorebird steward. Your artwork will be on display at the arts center or you may choose to take it home with you. This is part two of the June 2nd virtual program but you may still attend if you cannot make the virtual program.
Film: “Fantastic Fungi” Screening + Panel – Saturday, June 6 at 7 PM
A consciousness-shifting film about the mycelium network that takes us on an immersive journey through time and scale into the magical earth beneath our feet, an underground network that can heal and save our planet. Panel includes David Falkowski from Open Minded Organics and artist Scott Bluedorn. This program is part of EARTH - Artists as Activists - on view from April 17 - July 11, 2021. The intention of this exhibition is to creatively confront the threats to our environment, bringing forth a collective effort to inspire action.
Film: “Living Soil” Screening + Panel – Thursday, June 10 at 7 PM
Our soils support 95 percent of all food production. They filter our water, are one of our most cost-effective reservoirs for sequestering carbon, are our foundation for biodiversity, and are vibrantly alive, teeming with 10,000 pounds of biological life in every acre. Panelists include Dr. Deborah Aller, Dan Heston, Layton Guenther, Jason Hansana Cofield, and Lauren Ruiz. Moderated by Alexandra Talty. This program is part of EARTH - Artists as Activists - on view from April 17 - July 11, 2021. Architecture + Design Tour – Friday, June 11 at 11 AM and 1:30 PM
For SAC’s annual Architecture + Design Tour, renowned architect and new Jobs Lane neighbor Peter Marino will lead an intimate tour of the Peter Marino Art Foundation, once home to the Rogers Memorial Library. This fundraising event formally welcomes SAC’s new neighbor, Peter Marino, while experiencing this historic building and iconic garden in center of the Village. This private tour will take place in two groups of 25 with sessions at 11:00am and 1:30pm. Lunch for both groups will be served in SAC’s newly refreshed Caesar Court Garden. Talk: Restorative Oysters: Celebrating Our Local Waterways & Aquaculture Industry – Sunday, June 13 at 6 PM
An evening celebrating our local waterways and learning more community oyster growing and the commercial aquaculture industry, featuring several esteemed panelists from our partner organizations including Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Marine Program, Group for the East End, Peconic Baykeeper, and local oyster growers. This event features two important panel discussions on clean water and septic solutions, and aquaculture and oyster farming. An oyster tasting in partnership with our friends at Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program will take place on our lawn, as well as a short film program highlighting CCE Marine’s SPAT Program. Virtual Talk: The Artist’s View – Contrasting Expressions of Nature – Wednesday, June 16 at 6 PM
Long Island’s natural environment has been the muse for countless artists, starting with indigenous people who created beautiful art inspired by the land and sea. That inspiration continues today with many local artists who use a variety of diverse methods and natural materials to create their work. Join us for this moderated panel featuring Scott Bluedorn, Anne Sherwood Pundyk, and Cindy Pease Roe to learn more about how the beauty of Long Island’s environment informs and inspires their creativity. Our moderator is Kathryn Szoka, local photographer and co-owner of Canio’s Books. This program is part of EARTH - Artists as Activists - on view from April 17 - July 11, 2021. Talk: Tree Tour with Tucker Marder – Friday, June 18 at 11 AM and 3 PM
Tucker Marder will lead a tour of the Folly Tree Arboretum, a dendrological archive of over 250 rare, unusual and culturally significant trees located on the South Fork of Long Island. Trees in the collection include a sycamore that went to the moon on Apollo 14, a tree with useless fruits, and an oak tree that owns itself. Folly Tree Arboretum produces projects that explore the ways in which culture, narrative and imagination form human's relationship to the natural world as well as supports the work of others who are developing new and creative methods of environmental story telling. Talk: Using Art to Advance a Case for Life on Earth – Thursday, June 24 at 6 PM
Conserving nature and tapping into human creativity may not immediately appear to be connected. Panelists including Safina Center Founding President Dr. Carl Safina, photographer and educator Patricia Paladines, award-winning writer Paul Greenberg, writer and artist Erica Cirino, and medical anthropologist and scientific illustrator Kate Thompson will discuss inspiration, conservation, preservation of both nature and human communities, and more. This program is part of EARTH - Artists as Activists - on view from April 17 - July 11, 2021. Whimsy in the Garden – Friday, June 25 at 6:30 PM
Southampton Arts Center will host an enchanted evening of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres for the inaugural summer cocktail party. Guests will welcome summer by strolling the SAC grounds, which have been transformed into WHIMSY, a sculpture garden curated by Eric Fischl featuring works from world renowned artists. This fundraising event supports SAC’s work in bringing much vitality to our beloved Village. This event is sponsored by Graff, The Purist, and Artisan Luxe.

Film: The Last Waltz Screening with Hamptons Doc Fest – Sunday, June 27 at 7 PM
Seventeen years after joining forces as the backing band for rockabilly cult hero Ronnie Hawkins, Canadian roots rockers The Band call it quits with a lavish farewell show at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Nov. 25, 1976. Filmed by Martin Scorsese, this documentary features standout performances by rock legends such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell and Muddy Waters, as well as interviews tracing the group's history and discussing road life.

On view now in the galleries, EARTH – Artists as Activists, is open Thursday through Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. This exhibition is free, though suggested $5 donations are appreciated.
