Southampton Arts Center Kicks Off 2019 with New Exhibition “TAKEOVER! Artists in Residence”
(Southampton, NY 1/15/2019) – Southampton Arts Center, located at 25 Jobs Lane in the heart of Southampton Village, is thrilled to announce the opening of its first exhibition of 2019. TAKEOVER! Artists in Residence, curated by Artistic Director Amy Kirwin will open on Saturday, February 9 with a free reception for the public from 5 to 7 PM, and will run through Sunday, April 14, 2019.
For seven weeks in the winter of 2019 Southampton Arts Center will hand over its galleries to nine East End artists, each with an assigned space to set up a “pop-up” studio. Completed works will be installed and the artists will have scheduled weekly studio time in the galleries from Thursday to Sunday, 12-6 PM to create new works in a wide variety of mediums. A schedule will be posted online each week so the public can plan visits accordingly. This gives guests the opportunity to visit repeatedly to view the progress of new works. It is both encouraged and anticipated that the TAKEOVER! artists will also collaborate organically during the course of their residencies.
TAKEOVER Artists include Scott Bluedorn, Daniel Cabrera, Darlene Charneco, Kara Hoblin, Ruby Jackson, Laurie Lambrecht, Jerome Lucani, Paton Miller, and Jeff Muhs.
“I’m incredibly excited for the community to take a rarely seen peek into the creative process with these nine talented East End artists as they take over the galleries of Southampton Arts Center,” says Amy Kirwin, SAC Artistic Director and TAKEOVER! curator. “These “pop-up” studios will allow guests to get a sense of what it’s like to be invited into these sacred private spaces and follow the artists in the process of creating new works. My hope is that that visitors will return often to see the progress.”
“Building on the record-setting crowds and 200 plus programs presented last year, 2019 promises to be another exciting, diverse and impactful year for Southampton Arts Center,” added Tom Dunn, SAC’s Executive Director. “We’re thrilled to kick off 2019 with this fun and interactive exhibition.”
During the seven-week run TAKEOVER! artists will also hold workshops for all ages, host intimate gallery tours, and be part of a weekly “hangout” which will take place every Thursday from 6-8 PM. Community members are encouraged to come and spend the evening with the artists, play ping pong, have a drink, listen to music, socialize, and watch the creative process at play.
In addition to the “pop-up” studios, the entrance gallery will include Handoff: Weaving in Space. This site-specific project, conceived by Christine Sciulli and Bastienne Schmidt, takes on the tradition of the Exquisite Corpse as a collaborative action drawing-in-space, constructed and manufactured in-situ with ropes, threads and textiles. Referencing the drawing-in-space tradition of Eva Hesse, Sheila Hicks, and Fred Sandback, invited artists will engage their own practice in a ricocheting handoff to create a three-dimensional drawing – weaving and subsuming their contributions during the seven weeks of the exhibition to generate a large-scale spatial installation completed by the show’s closing. This piece invites discussion of conventional notions of authorship to explore the contemporary necessity of collective making.
“Handoff” artists include Louise Eastman, Sabra Moon Elliot, Saskia Friedrich, LoVid, Toni Ross, Bastienne Schmidt, Christine Sciulli, Morgana Tetherow-Keller, Virva Hinnemo, and Almond Zigmund.
