Southampton Arts Center Offers Full Slate Of Programs for February

Southampton Arts Center [SAC – southamptonartscenter.org] will open their first exhibition of the year, OUTCROPPING – Indigenous Art Now, on Friday, February 4 at 12 PM. A celebration of contemporary Shinnecock Nation artists alongside Indigenous artists from an array of sovereign nations throughout the United States, this exhibition, curated by Jeremy Dennis, will address current Native issues locally and across the county, highlighting shared and individual triumphs and struggles. Complementing this exhibition will be a number of programs, including talks, workshops, and films, and the return of SAC Open House Community Gatherings. Exhibition Opening: OUTCROPPING – Indigenous Art Now – OPENS Friday, February 4 @ 12 PM
OUTCROPPING - Indigenous Art Now, a multimedia exhibition, celebrates contemporary Shinnecock artists along with Indigenous artists from an array of unique sovereign nations throughout the United States. The exhibition will address Native issues across the county, highlighting shared and individual triumphs and struggles. The title 'Outcropping' refers to Shinnecock's translation into English as 'People of the Stony Shore' and Shinnecock's long connection to this land.

Talk: Curator-led Exhibition Tour – Saturday, February 5 @ 3 PM
OUTCROPPING – Indigenous Art Now curator and artist Jeremy Dennis will lead a tour of the galleries, discussing various artists and works from around the country. Limited availability – registration is required.

Studio @ SAC: Working with Wampum – Sunday, February 6 @ 3 PM
Matinecock wampum carver and cultural consultant Tecumseh Ceasar will lead a workshop on wampum with a presentation on Native history, culture, and customs, both past and present. This event is family friendly. Limited availability – registration is required.

Studio @ SAC: Figure Drawing Workshop – Friday, February 11 @ 1 PM
Working from a live model, artist Linda Capello’s figure drawing workshop will explore techniques of line, mass, gesture, proportion, and foreshortening, starting with short poses and working towards one long pose. Limited availability – registration is required.

Film: Film Night with Ginew Benton – Saturday, February 19 @ 6 PM
OUTCROPPING artist, filmmaker, and member of Shinnecock Nation Ginew Benton will screen his three short films, followed by a Q&A. Limited availability – registration is required.

Live: Open House Community Gathering – Friday, February 25 @ 6 PM
Join SAC after hours for a casual Open House Community Gathering. Shinnecock Nation artists and local community leaders and partners will be on hand to talk about their work. Shinnecock artists will also be selling their various wares.

Talk: Shinnecock Medicinal Plant Workshop – Saturday, February 26 @ 3 PM
Shinnecock Indian Nation Tribal Member, Little Beach Harvest managing director, and author of “50 Plant Medicines: Indigenous Oral History & Perspective,” Chenae Bullock will lead a talk on medicinal plant use and presentation on marijuana. Limited availability – registration is required.

SAC’s galleries will be open Friday through Sunday from 12 to 5 PM beginning Friday, February 4. Learn more at southamptonartscenter.org/outcropping.
