Southampton Arts Center Celebrates Our Seas with a Weekend of Thought-Provoking Films

Screenings of One Ocean Film Tour, Fish & Men, and My Octopus Teacher

(Southampton, NY… July 2021) On Sunday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m., Southampton Arts Center [SAC – southamptonartscenter.org], will open their grounds to host the One Ocean Film Tour. Presented by Hydro Flask, this world-class series of ocean-loving films focuses on adventure, the aquatic environment, and inspirational stories. Sponsored by Elyn and Jeff Kronemeyer, this year’s tour features eight short films focusing on ocean conservation, surfing, diving, exploration, and more. The One Ocean Film Tour is part of SAC’s weekend theme of celebrating the seas. These screenings strengthen the organization’s ongoing commitment to the environment.

“The sea is what draws us all to the East End, so we are thrilled to celebrate our oceans with an evening of short documentaries from the One Ocean Film Tour,” shares Elyn Kronemeyer, SAC trustee and event sponsor. “The vision of One Ocean is to increase awareness about ocean protection and conservation by sharing films made by people who have dedicated their lives to the ocean and all her glory. All screenings are official registered events with World Ocean Day. We encourage guests to come early and picnic on the lawn before the films, which begin at 8:15 p.m. Our friends at Surfrider Foundation Eastern Long Island Chapter, Southampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue Squad, and STAR AquaCenter will be on hand to share information about their organizations.”

Films to be screened include A Life of Endless Summers: The Bruce Brown Story, The Corona Comeback of Egypt’s Dolphins, Under the Ice of the Antarctica, Murder at Sea, Recolonizing the Elwha, Singlehanded, The Last Vaquita, and Whales in a Changing Ocean. More information about these films can be found at oneoceanfilmtour.com/program.

As part of a theme of celebrating our seas, SAC will also screen Fish & Men on Thursday, July 8 at 7 p.m. and My Octopus Teacher on Friday, July 9 at 8 p.m. Fish & Men exposes the high cost of cheap fish in the modern seafood economy and the forces threatening local fishing communities and public health by revealing how our choices as consumers drive the global seafood trade. A pre-screening panel includes Dr. Jennifer Jacquet, David Barber, Valentine Thomas, Esq, Sean Barrett, and moderator Tela Loretta Troge, Esq. My Octopus Teacher is a 2020 Netflix Original documentary film directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed, which documents a year spent by filmmaker Craig Foster forging a relationship with a wild common octopus in a South African kelp forest. At the 93rd Academy Awards, it won the award for Best Documentary Feature.
