Southampton Arts Center Offers Full Slate of Programs for August
Film Screenings + Panels, ICP Talks, Celebrity Autobiography, Wellness, and More
(Southampton, NY… July 2021) Summer is in full swing at Southampton Arts Center [SAC – southamptonartscenter.org]. From the return of ICP Talks, this year with a focus on street photography, to a hilarious reading of celebrity autobiographies by their fellow stars to thought-provoking films and panels, there is no shortage of things to do at SAC. Here’s what’s on deck for August…
Live: Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed & Unbowed with Southampton African American Museum – Sunday, August 1 @ 2 PM
Unbossed & Unbowed is a solo performance about Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman to win a seat in Congress and the first to run for President of the United States. In the 1960s, Brooklyn-born Shirley Chisholm, the daughter of Caribbean immigrant parents decided to enter politics to speak for the disenfranchised. There, she shook up America’s political machine, the all-boys network, and said ‘no’ to the status quo. She called herself Fighting Shirley. Written and performed by Ingrid Griffith. Directed by Zoya Kachadurian.
A panel discussion after the performance will feature writer and performer Ingrid Griffith, director Zoya Kachadurian, Shinnecock Nation member and activist Tela Loretta Troge, Esq., and African American Museum of Nassau County director of art and curator Minna Dunn, moderated by Southampton African American Museum executive director Brenda Simmons.

Kids: The GIANT Room – Runway Show – Thursday, August 5 at 4 PM
The GIANT Room is back with another popular program for kids. Families with kids 3 to 12 years old are invited to join us, design, make, and put up an awesome futuristic fashion show. We’ll come up with ideas for summer accessories like new shades, hats, light up laces or bracelets and necklaces, tie dye socks and masks (you can bring your old shirts or even shoes for some dying adventure, too), and make and try them on. Participants will become designers of fashionable items using arts and crafts and simple electronics to create their own fresh looks.

Talks: ICP Talks: Street Photography with Richard Renaldi – Thursday, August 5 @ 7 PM
The International Center of Photography (ICP) and Southampton Arts Center present ICP Talks on Street Photography, a series of three illustrated talks with esteemed photographers making work on the street. Portrait photographer Richard Renaldi will discuss his photographic work including his recent project, Touching Strangers, where he paired together strangers on the street, asking them to touch or embrace one another to create moments of vulnerability and compassion captured in his striking photographs.

Wellness: Bande Barre – Fridays + Saturdays, through August 6 – 14 @ 8 AM + 10:15 AM
This is a one-stop-shop for a complete body and mind workout. Barre seamlessly blends moves from ballet, Pilates, strength training, and yoga. You will be guided through a series of micro-movements and active holds, using a set of light hand weights and your body weight for resistance. These small, isolated movements yield extensive results: long, lean, sculpted lines. You’ll work muscles you didn’t even know you have and feel them for days after.

Wellness: Bande Cardio Fit – Fridays + Saturdays, August 6 – 14 @ 9:15 AM
This class highlights everything bande does best in an efficient (and addicting!) format. Our 45-minute class combines cardio and sculpt training in one. Cardio blasts will get your heart rate pumping while Barre fundamentals are merged with compound full-body movements designed to strengthen and lengthen. Cardio Fit hits every muscle. Your endorphins will be flowing.

Film: Out of Africa – Friday, August 6 @ 8 PM
Initially set on being a dairy farmer, the aristocratic Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) travels to Africa to join her husband, Bror (Klaus Maria Brandauer), who instead spends their money on a coffee plantation. After discovering Bror is unfaithful, Karen develops feelings for hunter Denys (Robert Redford), but realizes he prefers a simplistic lifestyle compared to her upper-class background. The two continue on until a series of events force Karen to choose between her love and personal growth.

Live: Hamptons Fashion Week – Saturday, August 7 @ 5 PM
A variety of celebrity designers will take center stage, outdoors and indoors, and feature an array of collections in a full-frontal runway. VIPs will enjoy an all-white floral décor, sip rosé and signature drinks sponsored by Spring 44 and BODVAR House of Roses, sample appetizers, and enjoy experiential opportunities and popup exhibitors. Designers include Cesar Galindo, Brochu Walker, Culture Trees, and House of Barretti.

Film + Panel: The Edge of Existence presented by Empowers Africa – Sunday, August 8 @ 7:30 PM
THE EDGE OF EXISTENCE highlights issues of human-wildlife conflict in the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania, where humans and wildlife are struggling to co-exist.

Kids: Boogaloo! – Thursday, August 12 at 4 PM
Inspired by Latin boogaloo, or bugalú, SPANGLISH FLY plays irresistible grooves that blend Afro-Caribbean rhythms with the fervor, the feeling, and the harmonics of 60s soul. SPANGLISH FLY "roars through covers, originals, and transformations of previously untouched soul hits" (Village Voice), paying homage to the boogaloo genre while refreshing it for a new generation.

Talk: ICP Talks: Street Photography with Andre Wagner – Thursday, August 12 @ 7 PM
The International Center of Photography (ICP) and Southampton Arts Center present ICP Talks on Street Photography, a series of three illustrated talks with esteemed photographers making work on the street. Brooklyn-based photographer Andre Wagner will discuss his investigation of the American social landscape, exploring themes of race, class, community, and cultural identity.

Film + Panel: The Devil Wears Prada – Friday, August 13 @ 7:30 PM
Andy (Anne Hathaway) is a recent college graduate with big dreams. Upon landing a job at prestigious Runway magazine, she finds herself the assistant to diabolical editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Andy questions her ability to survive her grim tour as Miranda's whipping girl without getting scorched. A panel discussion prior to the film will be hosted by Fern Mallis, and will feature producer Wendy Finerman.

Live: Hamptons Jazz Fest with Benny Benack Quintet – Saturday, August 14 @ 7 PM
The concerts are intended to expose as many people as possible to the wonderful diverse world of jazz music with free concerts accessible to all. Cultural diversity and roots of jazz will be celebrated with performing artists from the US and around the World. This performance features the Benny Benack Qunitet.

Filmmaker Kate Novack explores the life and career of fashion journalist André Leon Talley – from his childhood in the segregated South to his iconic, barrier-breaking work at Women's Wear Daily, W and Vogue.

Kids: Goat on a Boat Puppet Show: Fox Fables – Thursday, August 19 @ 4 PM
The story is about a fox who loses his precious tail and with it, his identity. He tries to be several other animals instead – with hilarious results – before realizing the moral lesson of this ancient fable.

Talk: ICP Talks: Street Photography with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb – Thursday, August 19 @ 7PM
The International Center of Photography (ICP) and Southampton Arts Center present ICP Talks on Street Photography, a series of three illustrated talks with esteemed photographers making work on the street. Photographers Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb present a dynamic talk titled, THE BLIND MAN & THE BUS: On Street Photography and the Poetic Image. The collaborators will show a number of projects—both individual and collaborative—and discuss their work in the context of the tradition of street photography.

Gala: Patrons Circle Dinner – Friday, August 20 @ 6:30 PM
Southampton Arts Center is pleased announce our 2021 Patrons Circle Dinner. We invite friends, both new and old alike, to join us for a magical and intimate “appreciation” dinner in the Caesar Garden on the iconic grounds of 25 Jobs Lane. This critical SAC fundraising initiative is responsible for generating one-third of SAC’s annual contributed income – allowing SAC to continue our year-round world class programming and serve as a critical economic driver of our beloved community.

Live: Celebrity Autobiography – Sunday, August 22 @ 7:30 PM
The “funniest show in town, hands down!” is coming to SAC. The acclaimed international comedy Broadway sensation Celebrity Autobiography features an all-star cast, including Christie Brinkley, Matthew Broderick, Susan Lucci, Ralph Macchio, and creators Eugene Pack and Dayle Reyfel – acting out hilarious passages from other stars’ memoirs.

Kids: The GIANT Room – Game Carnival – Thursday, August 26 at 4 PM
Nothing says summer more than designing and playing epic games with friends and family. Join The GIANT Room team to design all sorts of games from games of chance, to mazes, grabbers, electronic games, and everything in-between. We’ll design, make, play, and share in all the amusements together. This program is a wonderful blend of STEM + Art activities for families with kids 3 to 12 years old.
