Southampton Arts Center and Inspiration Plus PresentSolar Impressions & International Masters / Collaborations in Printmaking
(Southampton, NY 10/28/2019) – Southampton Arts Center, located at 25 Jobs Lane in the heart of Southampton Village, will host the long-anticipated opening of two simultaneous exhibitions focusing on the world of printmaking: Solar Impressions Juried Exhibition and International Masters / Collaborations in Printmaking. Presented by Southampton Arts Center and Inspiration Plus, the exhibitions will feature giants in modern and contemporary art, along with talented artists from all over the world showcasing printmaking methods that incorporate the Solarplate printing technique developed and practiced by Sag Harbor artist and master printmaker Dan Welden. The two exhibitions, on view November 16 – December 29, 2019, bring the Solarplate printmaking technique, an eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable fine art making process to the forefront of art.
SOLAR IMPRESSIONS
Solar Impressions Juried Exhibition features works by artists using Solarplates, a scientific breakthrough of light sensitive plates, invented by Dan Welden and is sponsored by the Inspiration Plus Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating art that celebrates and educates through science. Over one hundred impressions were selected from more than 700 entries from across the United States, Ireland, Israel, England, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Canada, Spain, and France. The esteemed jury consisted of Laura G. Einstein, manager of the Mezzanine Gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Alex Ferrone, owner/director of the Alex Ferrone Gallery in Cutchogue, NY; and Ron Pokrasso, Santa Fe artist and world printmaking traveler. Awards Juror, the acclaimed international artist Eric Fischl, selected over 40 winners who will be acknowledged on opening night.
Noteworthy are the health, safety, and environmental factors involved in the use of light sensitive plates, constituting the scientific side of the show’s theme: all images showcased were processed with sunlight (or UV light) and ordinary tap water to harden and etch the light sensitized steel backed polymer plates. No acids or hazardous chemicals needed to be used for this technique.
INTERNATIONAL MASTERS / COLLABORATIONS IN PRINT WITH DAN WELDEN
Since 1971, Dan Welden has been collaborating with artists using stone lithography and etching. His studio, Hampton Editions, Ltd., has been the home and birthplace of thousands of both young and old artists exploring the potential of the printmaking world. The exhibition concentrates on international artists that have collaborated with Welden over the years to produce original, high quality fine art prints. Each artist created specific works either directly on Bavarian limestone or with the Solarplate polymer printmaking technique.
This exhibition includes collaborative works with Welden by Willem de Kooning, Elaine de Kooning, Kiki Smith, Esteban Vicente, Dan Flavin, James Brooks, Eric Fischl, Robert Gwathmey, Paul Davis, Syd Solomon, Roy Nicholson, Jack Youngerman, Robert Dash, Louisa Chase, David Salle, Alfonso Ossorio, Ibram Lassaw, Lynda Benglis, Bill King, Jane Freilicher, Jimmy Ernst, Kurt Vonnegut.
Artist Eric Fischl has collaborated with Dan Welden to produce a special Solarplate edition for the exhibition to benefit Southampton Arts Center and Inspiration Plus. The first 5 impressions will be available to SAC Members only at a special rate of $1500, first come first served. The remaining 15 will be sold at $1750. In addition to works on view being available for purchase, a special silent art auction will take place including over 30 additional works by Solar Impressions artists beginning at 5 PM on Saturday, November 16 and closing at 5 PM on Sunday, December 1. These pieces will be available to take home after November 16, just in time for the holidays.

About Dan Welden
Dan Welden is a master printmaker, painter, educator and author. He has been making prints and works on paper for over 50 years. Dan is an innovator at the forefront of the alternative health and safety-oriented movement of printmaking, and the originator of a technique called Solarplate. He co-authored with Pauline Muir ‘Printmaking in the Sun’ in 2001, the comprehensive manual of Solarplate methods. He has spent decades inspiring teachers, students and artists in art making using the safer and greener methods of Solarplate etching without the use of acids or other dangerous chemicals. His work has been shown in 91 international solo exhibitions in museums and galleries and over 700 group exhibitions in the U.S., Europe, China, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand and Peru.
