Southampton Arts Center to Co-Host Two Forums with Local Environmental Organizations This Month

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. 1/4/20 --- Southampton Arts Center is excited to announce that they will be partnering with local environmental groups this month to co-host two not-to-be-missed forums. The Drawdown East End Festival is up first, focusing on solutions for the reversal of global warming, on Saturday, January 11 and Transforming Landscapes with Lake Agawam Conservancy (LAC) follows on Friday, January 17. Both events are FREE to the public and advance registration is strongly encouraged.

Drawdown East End Festival: Films • Forums • Fun - East End Solutions for Climate Health will take place on Saturday, January 11 from 11 AM-6 PM. The free event presented by Drawdown East End includes screenings of 2040, an Australian film by award-winning director, Damon Gameau at 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM, Forum Breakouts at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, Eco Vendors, and much more.

Drawdown is when concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gasses have peaked and are declining, thus, reversing global warming. Project Drawdown is a research and communication organization that has scientifically identified ‘solutions’ to reverse global warming, 80 of which are already in practice worldwide and 20 of which are in development stages. Drawdown East End is a grassroots group of citizens representing all five east end towns, with the rewarding mission to actively engage our communities in solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions to achieve drawdown and reverse global warming.

Lake Agawam Conservancy (LAC) will present their free forum on Friday, January 17 from 10 AM-2:30 PM. The “teens” are behind us but the toxic local water bodies remain.  The twenties are our future.  Safe, healthy landscape practices need to be a major focus, which means transitioning from conventional landscape practices to toxin-free property management.  This will require knowledge and an understanding of our impact on our own properties and clients’ properties.  This educational forum will include presentations by local experts who have decades of hands-on experience with creating beautiful healthy ecosystems on clients’ properties.  Topics will include a brief review of why our water system is vulnerable to contamination and sources of contamination, best toxin free practices – soil management, water use, plant selection, buffers at water’s edge, comprehensive overview of integrated pest management (IPM) practices throughout the year, plus an extensive Question and Answer session.  Complimentary lunch and will be included.

Visit SouthamptonArtsCenter.org for more info and full schedules for both events.

SAC is also delighted to draw attention to the creation of the East End Eco Community Group. Inspired by Photo Ark with the goal of continuing the momentum of Joel Sartore’s impactful National Geographic exhibition in relation to wildlife conservation, the initiative also focuses on environmental and marine conservation. The fast-growing group meets bi-monthly and is currently working on a concise “how-to” window sticker for public display which will include simple recommendations to help individuals take steps to implement change in their daily lives. Those interested in joining the Eco Community Group can contact info@southamptoncenter.org.
