Southampton Arts Center Kicks Off 2020 with the Return of “TAKEOVER! Artists in Residence” with Ten New Artists

(Southampton, NY  1/16/2020) – Southampton Arts Center, located at 25 Jobs Lane in the heart of Southampton Village, is thrilled to announce the opening of its first exhibition of the new year with the return of one of their most successful shows to date. TAKEOVER 2020! Artists in Residence, conceived and curated by Artistic Director Amy Kirwin, will open on Saturday, February 1 with a FREE public reception from 6 to 8 PM followed by an After (Dance) Party with DJ Mister Lama from 8-10 PM. The exhibition will run through Sunday, April 12 and has been sponsored by Ingrid Arneberg with additional support from the Long Island Community Foundation.

TAKEOVER 2020! artists include Jodi Bentivegna, Michael Butler, Isadora Capraro, Franco Cuttica, Esly Escobar, Melinda Hackett, Erica-Lynn Huberty, Dinah Maxwell Smith, Miles Partington, and Kerry Sharkey-Miller.

These ten talented East End artists will take over the galleries for ten thrilling weeks. Each artist has been assigned their own space for a “pop-up” studio containing personal items that both comfort and inspire them to create. In addition to exhibiting completed pieces, the artists will be in residence in the galleries and their works-in-progress will be on view at all times. The artists will have scheduled weekly studio time in the galleries from Thursday to Sunday from 12-6 PM to create new works in a wide variety of mediums. A schedule will be posted online each week so the public can plan visits accordingly. This gives guests the opportunity to return over the course of the ten weeks to view the artists processes and the progress of the works.

This artists’ playground offers the public a rarely seen peek into the creative process and visitors can experience a taste of what it’s like to be invited into these sacred private spaces. It is both encouraged and anticipated that the TAKEOVER 2020! artists will collaborate organically during the course of their residencies.

NEW THIS YEAR! Students from The Ross School and Southampton High School will be working alongside the professional artists in their own designated studio spaces, offering them the rare opportunity to learn from the collective years of experience surrounding them. Additionally, the unique interactive setting will help them build confidence and enhance their communication skills. Southampton High School students include Jen Muller, Cynthia Lin, Caraline Oakley, and Ava Cesario.

There will be workshops for all ages, intimate gallery tours, and unique programs inspired by the artists and their works in progress. Additionally, weekly “hangouts” will take place every Thursday from 6-8 PM where the community can come and spend the evening with the artists, participate in a lively game of ping pong, have a drink, socialize, and watch the creative process at play. Each “hangout” will be co-hosted by a community partner to further enhance the evening. Partners include OLA, South Fork Natural History Museum, East End Food Institute, Peconic Land Trust, Surfrider Foundation East End Chapter, Slow Food East End, and the Watermill Center, who will be working with their artists in residence to create unique performances and experiences.

“The first year of Takeover was such a delight and we were blown away by the enthusiastic response from the community. It was an invaluable experience for the artists being forced out of their comfort zones, and the sense of play and camaraderie was contagious. I am so excited for visitors to have the chance to meet these ten new artists as well as the students, and to witness the work as it unfolds,” says Amy Kirwin, SAC Artistic Director and TAKEOVER! creator and curator. “We have assembled another incredibly talented and accomplished group of individuals with diverse bodies of work. All of the artists will be teaching workshops as well, so not only can guests interact with them while they are at work in their studio spaces, but they can also sign up for these specialized classes that will be offered every weekend at a very low cost.”
